As the name suggests, the regular cab is the standard configuration with two front doors and one row of seating. Regular cab models typically seat 2 adults comfortable, and three when necessary. There are certain aspects to evaluate when considering a regular cab purchase:
Regular cab models greatly limit the number of passengers you can carry to three, or two if you opt for a center console. This could be convenient or inconvenient.
Regular cab models are the least expensive of the three configurations. So, if passenger accommodation isn’t on your priorities list, you can spend the money on premium options instead of seating.
Regular cab models make great work and fleet trucks.
Less room for passengers means more room for tools, equipment, etc.
While other cabs offer standard and short truck bed options, regular cab is the only configuration that can be optioned with a long bed (8 feet).
Regular cab models don’t offer as much in-cabin cargo room and storage options as larger cab sizes.
SILVERADO 1500 DOUBLE CAB
Also referred to as an extended cab, the Double Cab comes with a standard 6.5-foot truck bed and significantly increased interior cabin volume:
Double Cab models occupy the middle ground between regular and crew cab configurations.
Double Cab models feature four doors for easy access to both rows.
Double Cab models seat up to six people if both rows have bench seats.
Double Cab models are shorter in length than standard-bed crew cab models, making them easier to maneuver.
If you don’t need to carry passengers, Double Cab models offer lots of interior cargo room behind the front seats, especially compared to regular cab models. The seat bottoms can also fold up to provide extra vertical space.
SILVERADO 1500 CREW CAB
The largest of all configurations, crew cab models offer more spacious seating for up to 6 people and are available in two bed sizes.
Crew cab models seat the same number of people as Double Cab models, but rear headroom is increased by two inches and rear legroom is increased by more than six inches. This offers an optimal ride for all occupants.
Increased interior volume makes Crew Cab models make great family vehicles.
Crew cab models can option the 6.5-foot standard bed, or the 5-foot-10-inch short bed for improved handling.
Crew cab models have full-size second row doors, instead of half-size doors like the Double Cab.
If you don’t need the seating, the 60/40-split rear seat bottoms flip up to provide extensive interior storage options. The nearly flat floor and high roof allow for easy transportation of taller items.
SILVERADO 1500 DURAMAX DIESEL ENGINE
When it comes to towing, low-rpm torque is the name of the game. With that in mind, Chevy is set to offer the Silverado 1500 with an available 3.0-Liter I-6 LM2 Duramax power plant. The turbocharged diesel engine 460 pound-feet of torque at just 1500 rpm and features air-to-liquid inter-cooling, and a variable-geometry turbo.
Turbocharged diesel engines also carry the added benefit of improved fuel economy. The new inline-six diesel option features a low-pressure exhaust-gas re-circulation system to both improve responsiveness and increase fuel-efficiency. GM is still waiting on EPA certification for the diesel engine, but the automaker expects to exceed 30 mpg on the highway. Quite impressive for a full-size truck.
